Quick bullets:
1. Don't overuse abominations, especially walkin' dead. My posse became
very UNafraid of monsters from over use. Use things like Black Hats and
Mutants and such. These can be worse because their (almost) normal people
destroying the world instead of some alien "thing"
2. Kill characters, but also tell the group that you will be killing
characters. If you don't like to kill characters here is another
suggestion:
Our group has rules where if a char. takes a maimed to the head or guts
the player can choose to take a critical instead. The char. is knocked out
for the duration of the encounter and will have some type of permanent
injury (ailin:chronic, clueless, slowpoke, -1 vigor, etc.)
I added that the marshal gets to add a black chip to the pot (see:
www.peginc.com/WeirdWest/Support/Adventures/WWChip.html). The only change
is that the black chip has the player's name on it and can only be used to
bone him over.
3. Limit the number of AB's in the group. I don't know if you've playerd
Deadlands: Weird West, but AB's in HoE are A LOT more powerful and have
far less draw backs. A posse full of AB's (and it will happen) can tear
thorugh most threats out there. Limit the number and have the posse decide
who gets to play what or have some random system to determine if the
player can have an AB (check out Gimme Shelter's char. gen. rules:
http://geocities.com/grifflik/Shelter-Houserules.html , actually the whole
site is good).
4. Ask the players what they want. Do they want Road Warrior or The
Postman or something in between? Do they want to play heavy cans and
doomsayers and destroy legions of automatons or do they want to be
challenged by a single green robed doomsayer? Etc.
Hope these few help. Good Luck.
