RE: [HOE] Hunting handguns -- was: Desert Eagle= ultimate wasteland gun
My brother has fired the .44Magnum version of the Desert Eagle. He said it
kicked less than his .45ACP-firing H&K. Hardly at all, in fact. Part of
the reason the gun is so massive it so that the big .50 calibur stuff can be
shot reasonably accurately. The .357 cartridge probably won't make the gun
jump at all.
I've fired my brother's .45ACP combat handgun by H&K, a friends Colt 1911,
and I own a .45 Peacemaker, just like Ronan Lynch ;-) The H&K is a
new-fangled high-tech device made with polymers and fancy alloys and stuff.
The Peacemaker is a hefty hunk of steel. The 1911 is also pretty heavy.
The lighter gun doesn't absorb as much kick, so that transfers back to the
shooter's hand and wrist. The heavier 1911 had mild kick, with the same
ammo. My Peacemaker is a dream to shoot. However, if you carry a gun for a
living, the lighter weapon is much easier to wear in your holster for hours
on end. I doubt any real-life cop would ever consider a Desert Eagle as his
working sidearm. Even the Peacemaker is heavy, and bulky. Now, a waster in
HOE probably would think a heavy, tiring gun belt a much better alternative
to a light gun belt, if the heavy one keeps you out of some beastie's belly.
I'm curious if anyone has done game stats for some of the hunting handguns
that are available. I've fired a Ruger that used .30 rifle ammo (seems
small, but there's a LOT of power/powder behind that little bit o' .30 cal
lead), a semi-auto that used .45-70 rifle rounds, and I've seen and read
about .454 Casull and other hugely powerful revolvers. With scopes, these
revolvers replace rifles for some hunters today. How much damage would they
do against a rad zombie?
