Well there are lots of ways to boost your strain, but most all of them are
temporary and not really "you" doing, but you using stuff that does it.

Banshee stones give you something like 2d6 extra strain that SLOWLY
regenerates

Red is a drug that gives you a boost to your strain for awhile

There is an edge that lets you buy more strain, but the most you can get
is 5.

You could up your vigor die type...

Also there is the fortitude edge that lets you go up to twice your usual
strain (with serious risks).

The person was probably refering to using teh fortitude edge. If not,
he/she's playing in a SERIOUSLY high powered campaign.
