They did that because it was rare enough on Earth to cause wars, then
caused more wars on Banshee because of the abundance of ghost rock
there.

Personal theory, it was a portal through the Hunting Grounds and into
future Earth. The Hunting Grounds have many different outlets/inlets at
different points in space and time.

And the Unity showed up back in Earth orbit in 2082, but there's another
Unity hanging around the Banshee system. THe civilians from that Unity
have come back down to the planet with a disease (?) called 'Reaper
Madness' [using that instead of whatever medical term would describe
it.]
