I always assumed that, even though the energy they summon doesn't start in 
the scalp and go outwards (if it did, they blow the skin off their heads, 
which is gross), it does start very close to the surface of the skin (which 
is why it destroys the hair follicles over a long period, thus resulting in 
no hair). A helmet is further away from the skin than the starting point 
(at least part of the helmet is anyway), and thus could interfere quite 
badly if worn.
