Because you can fit 7 rounds of .45 ACP into the grip of an automatic,
but the SA Officer's Sidearm is a .50 pistol. The shell is a half inch
in diameter and about an inch long. It's a long cartridge which makes
for a thick and wide grip on the gun. It's also a little larger in
diameter than a .45 cartridge, so it takes up more space in the grip.
Even just a few milimeters per shell can count when you have to put a
thicker floorplate and heavier spring in the magazine.

If you can find a store that has one, check out the Desert Eagle .50 AE
and compare it to a Colt .45. The Desert Eagle is a monster.
