[HOE] RE: SUBS
Hey,
As far as I know, and my knowledge of Naval affairs is nto that of the land
based military, but after a sub does its job, IE firing its weapons it is to
what they are told. They may be recalled to be reloaded, or if their comm
centers are completely destroied they are cut loose.
There was a movie about this, were a millsle sub fired its weapons and wound
up in Australia. Don't remember the movie too well though. They are a
tool, like a bullet. They do what they gotta do and can be reloaded to do
it again or can be discarded.
The attack subs on the other hand are given free reign. They can run around
sink anything they like. So were one to find a functioning sub it would
more likely be one of these, that is assuming that they did their job and
sank the other missle boats. Sure there are some missle boats left, but
what do you do with a nuclear sub?
Also the reactors on the subs had to be refuelled pretty regular, thought I
dont' know how often but I'd say at least every 10 years or so. So unless
you got some spare rods, and I'm sure the Greenies do, the reactor isn't
working. They have Diesel engies, which will probably need a major
overhaul, or a good junker, cause 13 years of non use would have them not
working too well.
No assuming that one made it back to the good ol' USA/CSA, it would probably
not have any food stores, or torpedos for that matter. But food and
torpedos do not a submarine make. The crew might stay if given the option,
but what would they live on. There really aren't many ships to pirate from,
at least none that we know of. So you've got 115 guys in a big self powered
city with: 1) a finite amout of diesel fuel, 2) a reactor that has about 10
years left of power, and 3) no food.
Most places just have enough food to support themselves, much less have
enough to trade to feed 115 folks.
But you could probably run a sub with much less than 115 people, you could
probably do it wilt something like 20. But you'd not have that many
torpedos, but you could build a deck gun and hope it didn't was off.
As far as the ship being left empty, I don't know. If it were grounded yes,
but otherwise it would rust out and sink. The Russians had that happen one
of their mothballed subs in port a while back. It just sank because it
needed a coat of paint.
BUT I'm putting a derelict sub in my story, its not functional, but its got
a reactor, that for some reason is running. So if you want one, Knock your
self out!

Subject: [HOE] Nuclear subs
I don't know if this has been spoken of before, but this just recently
occurred to me: What happened to all the nuclear submarines that were
undoubtedly floating around during the Last War? I really don't see it as
likely that every last one of them was destroyed during the War and the Big
Bang, and I'm sure at least ONE has survived through the past thirteen
years.
This, of course, leads to a horrendously evil idea... Let's just say that
one of these subs, call it a US sub just for the sake of argument, managed
to survive through the Big Bang, then tried to come home through the Maze.
Then, something happened to the crew. Say, a bunch of croakers attacked the
ship, killed everyone aboard, and left the thing a floating derelict. Or
maybe some monstrosity was created on board and single handled slaughtered
everyone. Whatever happened, this empty, perfectly functional, well-armed
weapon of mass destruction has been floating around in the Maze for the past
few years... Now just imagine if a Black Hat squad or a roaming evil
doomsayer happened across this thing. Oh, the potential...
