Or perhaps parallel universes. Since it's already been established that you
can reach other versions of Earth through the hunting grounds, what if
that's what the Tunnel was/is: A pathway to an alternate earth where
dinosaurs evolved into a sentient being. A few cosmological changes might
make the system unrecognizable, too. The planet between Mars and Jupiter
not breaking up into an asteroid belt, for example, but some other disaster
strips a lot of Earth's ecosphere away, leaving it the desolate ruin of
Banshee.
