Cool idea - the enemy of my enemy is my friend and all that.

Have the remaining vehicles and tribute being returned to the townsfolk
when the posse meets them - that way it's proof that the Anti-templars ARE
being good guys.

They are just clueless about how heavy the hand of Throckmorton falls

I wouldn't write this as the only solution (unless you were going to submit
it), as posse's do tend to come up with some strange ideas - but it's
probably the best one.
