Think of graph paper - only instead of squares, it uses hexes. It allows a
greater "range" of movement - reducing the effect of diagonal movement
differences inherent in a square graph/map. (5 squares measured diagonally
is longer than 5 squares horizontally or vertically).
They've been used in games for quite some time, and then some brilliant
genius decided to place the hex pattern on a vinyl surface - allowing
people to draw on the map with water soluble markers to "show" the terrain
and stuff - making battles easier to describe and work through in a game.
Then someone used a clear vinyl sheet to put the hexes on - allowing
pre-drawn maps to be slipped underneath.
