As it's been beaten into me by Bob "I yelled out derisive commentary on
Starship Troopers throughout the movie and received applause from those
sitting behind me" Fisher, in the original novel the Skinnies were the
alien race the bugs used as shock troops/mooks.  In the old Avalon Hill
board game there was a picture of a lovely clay model of a skinny coming
out of a cave, and one has shown up in the computer-generated Starship
Troopers cartoon.
