while i think HOE is very dangerous, I tend not to think it's too lethal. The
trick i'm still learning as a marshall is how to balance a combat. one where
the pcs can be challanged, but not smeared. i really don't run a power
campaign, so my players have good skills, not just min/maxing. this does lead
to problems when running the big last combat. once my last combat was too small
and the players wiped them (i used 10 trogs, and 4 grundies, unfort one
character is a sniper with good rolls, the grundies ate it hardcore). so then
the next "big fight" i used 10 wormlings, and 5 wormling warriors. i had to
pull a "saving technique" to prevent mass slaughter (of my players). SO that's
something i still have to work on, but once my foresight grows i think HOE will
be less "instant death" and more of a true challenge for my players.
