[HoE] a poem
I wrote a poem for my poetry class and I figured you
guys would appreciate it more.
Meat Locker
Soon after humanity died away
and the world was left to me
I heard the most unexpected thing
as I cut people out of old newspapers.
Thud, Thud, Thud
It was coming from the meat locker,
the one I was in two days ago
looking for food and drink
but now it was empty, or should have been.
Thud, Thud, Thud
As I got closer the pounding got heavier.
It got so bad I could see the door tremble on its
hinges.
So I quickly padlocked it and ran upstairs
and didn't go in the basement again.
Thud, Thud, Thud
For a week it continued.
The sound of flesh thumping on metal
in it's rhythmic, steady pattern.
Then one afternoon it stopped.
Thud, Thud, ----
I stood at the top of the stairs
listening for sound for ten minutes
nothing, but what if it broke free?
I locked the basement door and boarded it up.
Thud, Thud, Thud
It began as I surfed across waves of tv static.
The unenthusiastic pounding was at my basement door.
So I got a gun and watched it,
waiting for it to free itself.
Thud, Thud, Thud
Three days of the damned noise
and not a wink of sleep.
So I went to bed and locked the door,
in case it broke loose in my slumber.
Thud, Thud, Thud
I was awakened by banging
at my bedroom door,
and there was only one place left to hide.
The closet.
Thud, Thud, Thud
I plunged myself into the small storage space
and closed the door behind me.
As I clicked the lock it began,
and the banging sounded like the nailing of a coffin.
Thud, Thud, Thud
