To add another tangent to this, I think the Boise Horror is the accumulated
souls of everyone who dies with a curse for the Templars on their lips. 
Basically, every time a Templar turns his back on a settlement because they
didn't leave mints on his pillow at the hotel or something, and that settlement
is destroyed, a little manitou approaches the sould of the dead and offers them
a chance to get back at that bastard Simon Mercer.
The Old Lady on the trip to Baphomet's pad said that Simon's coldness would be
his weakness, and it might destroy him someday....
