Yes, I believe the ships were just ships, and they actually had to go
through the gate to get anywhere.  Also, I don't believe they would hide it
from anyone.  All industrialized nations would of been involved, and by the
mid-21st century, I think any nation not industrialized would of been over
taken by it's more advanced neighbors.
