[HoE] Question of the Day #2 (6/11)
Exactly what the heck is the motorized movement rate in the Hoe "universe"?
Okay, it's not in the rulebook. So we look to the Wasted West Companion (or
whatever you call the second hard cover book). I'm not big on buying a
separate book just to get basic essential information on playing the game,
but moving right along...
There's a chart. Don't have the book in front of me, but it's pretty early
on in the rules, around where the new Hindrances & Edges are. It states
that you have an average travel time of 8 hours per day.
First of all...huh? You spend about 8 hours sleeping, and 8 hours
travelling. What do you _do_ with the other 8 hours a day? I haven't
camped in a while, but I didn't think it took 8 hours to set up and break
down camp. Knowing what occurred in this 8 hours would give us Marshalls a
better idea of how much the Posse can ignore it in the interests of
travelling further.
But moving right along...
Okay, so you travel 8 hours a day. There's also some text about travelling
faster, but it says that you can't raise the Average Travel Rate. Umm,
again, huh? How can you can travel faster and _not_ raise your Average
Travel rate? We kinda see where they're going here, but it could be stated
a _lot_ more clearly. But moving right along...
So finally we get a mini chart. For walking, it says you can go 20 miles a
day, with an average rate of 2.5 MPH. 8 hours * 2.5 MPH = 20 miles per day.
Great.
Then there's horseback. You can go 40 miles a day, with an average MPH of
5. 8 * 5 = 40. Also great.
But then there's motorized movement rules. You can go 400 miles a day, with
an average MPH Of 20. 8 * 20 = 160. Not so great.
The third line of this table seems to be a misprint. Either A) you _can_ go
400 miles a day, in which case the average MPH should be 50, not 20. That's
a pretty big discrepancy, and an average MPH travel rate of 50 seems a
little...high, shall we say? The text in the paragraphs seems to confirm
this, commenting on choked highways, etc.
Or B) Your average MPH is 20, but your per/day rate is only 160 miles. This
makes a bit more sense, but the chart doesn't _say_ that.
Anybody know? There's no errata at Pinnacle's web site or under the
accumulated rulings that refer to the Wasted West book, so apparently we're
supposed to read this chart as printed. But...it doesn't make any _sense_
as written.
I suppose the Road Warrior sourcebook might clarify this. But I'm even less
enthused about buying a book to clarify the book that I bought to clarify
the basic info that I needed in the first place that wasn't in the original
rulebook.
