Ok, just of the top of my head I'd say while in the truck they *would* be 
safe from the storm, even the lightning; however, the truck itself would not 
be so lucky.  I think it would go something like this  1) Hell storm comes.  
2) They hide in the truck.  3) Truck gets hit by lightning. (Marshal laughs 
evilly) 4) Battery explodes, alternator fries, distributor slags, sparks and 
smoke fill the cab. 5) Group now has to hoof it to find parts to fix truck.

Sounds like a perfect setup to the adventure to me.  If you are feeling 
generous, the bus in the story could supply some or all of the parts.  Or 
maybe not ;-)
