Alright, lots of stuff occured to me during this speculation
extravaganza, but none more than this possible idea:

If I remember correctly, funky human abilities didn't occur on Earth
(save for mythical times) until the manitous got the ability to enter
this plane of existence.  Perhaps the reason the skinnies didn't come
out until our arrival implies that we (or the reckoners on our heels)
are similar interlopers into the anouks' plane of existence.

Some random musings based on this:

The Hellstromme Tunnel was guided towards this alternate planet
(dimension?) to spread the Reckoner's influence and
corrupt/destroy/cleanse another entire people?  If there are indeed
other dimensions (beyond the Faraway realm), then there must be
something special about this one.  Perhaps Faraway is actually another
realm of the afterlife (good souls are in Sykolite?).  Perhaps the
Sykolite is simply the manifestation of the beliefs of the anouks
(assuming that they're just natives of another, unleated planet, rather
than some sort of supernatural angel type).

Anyway, I've rambled enough.  Maybe this will spark a more refined idea
in someone else's noggin; I need some sleep...
