Hey all, it's your friendly neighborhood Smiling Bandit again, and I'm
lookin' for your input/help.
Having FINALLY gotten The Great Maze, I have begun work on "Street
Fighters," the HOE version of Fu Fighters I have been tinkering with
for a while. I have a few things worked out (to an extent), and was
looking for feedback and suggestions. Once I settle everything, I
will post the finished product on my webpage (crediting everyone's
ideas I take). Here's what I have thus far...
Story: After the civil war, Shan Fan was brought under US control,
and for the most part, the martial arts became very insignifcant, held
secret by the Chinese for their exclusive use. Things stayed that way
until around the 1950's, when a man by the name of Bruce Lee broke
with tradition and began teaching anyone who wanted to learn. He got
a lot of heat from his fellow Chinese, but his efforts popularized the
arts, and made him a world famous movie star. He was later poisoned
in Hong Kong for revealing the secrets of martial arts, but he got the
last laugh. His wife released his notes on "Jeet Kune Do," a fighting
style he was developing, and encoded within them were the techniques
of Ch'i control (i.e. fu powers)
The people who unlocked these secrets began using them in no-holds
barred "street fights." These fights became all the rage during the
late 20th and 21st centuries, spawning an internationally popular TV
show, WMAC Masters (created by Lee's daughter), and two professional
wrestling circuits, WWF and WCW. These "street fighters" were
flamboyant, raucous, and their feats of martial prowess amazed the
public.
Most people thought these fights were created using stage magic and
wires, never realizing the truth.
After the Big Bang, the fighters that had survived began training
anyone who wanted to learn and could pay for the service, in a way
similar to their founder. The Wasted West is a dangerous place, and
people need any edge they can get...
Edges n' Hindrances: I have changed or gotten rid of several of the
hindrances in the original Fu book.
The Cup Overflows: Street fighters are naturally flashy, and as such,
all SFs have a modified form of Cup. They create all of the
impressive visuals of Cup, but their Ch'i recovery rolls aren't
affected.
"Sifu! Sifu!": Nobody's that humble these days. Unless a street
fighter's a big suck up, he doesn't do the whole "I'm not worthy"
schtick, treating his teacher as an equal (or worse, if he doesn't
like him.) This hindrance is not available to street fighters.
Style Vulnerability: For the most part, the only "style" anyone
practices in the Wasted West is Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do, which is
very freeform. As such, anyone using JKD is mentally prepared for
almost any attack, and can't be caught by a set group of moves. This
hindrance is not available to street fighters.
To compensate for these hindrances, I made a few of my own...
"Behold My Fists of Fury!!!" -3
Street fighters with this hindrance don't do subtle. When combat
arises, they go screaming headlong into it, revealing their presence
to anyone who isn't deaf and blind. Note that this is different from
Big Britches; the street fighter doesn't jump into any battle, he just
makes sure that when he does, everyone knows.
"Kung Fu is Superior!!!" -3 (this is different from MY kung fu is
Superior!!!)
Who needs a gun when you have kung fu? Not the street fighter with
hindrance. SFs with this hindrance find fighting with anything other
than their powers to be beneath them. They don't use guns, gizmos, or
anything else besides their fists, feet, and hand to hand weapons.
They also bad mouth people who do use these "inferior weapons,"
causing no end of trouble for themselves. Treat this hindrance as a
mix between an oath and self righteous.
Flashy -1
If your SF is Flashy, he lives by this credo: "If your gonna do it, do
it with style." Flashy SFs have a particular style, both fighting and
his attire, that make him stand out. Maybe he wears an orange mohawk
and a green spandex jumpsuit, or sings childrens songs while he kicks
*ss, but he's always memorable. People like this are easy for people
intent on revenge to find...
"Finish Him!!!" -5
When a SF with "finish him!!!" comes into town, stay out of his way,
or you'll end up in a pine box. Whenever a street fighter with
hindrance gets into a fight, he fights to kill. He isn't necessarily
a bad person, he just plays for keeps. Needless to say, this doesn't
make him very popular with the law dogs. Anyone taking this hindrance
would be advised to do so carefully; this kind of character can get
dead quick, and people aim for the head nowadays, just to make sure he
stays dead...
Powers: This is the point where I'm kind of stuck. I figure most of
the powers in the book would still be around (though with different,
"cooler" names), but I see SF as having bigger powers too, maybe
fireballs or teleportation, like in the video game. Here are a few
things I am changing however...
Abundance of Pecking Birds: Popularly known as "Razorwind," this
power also allows an SF to throw multiple projectiles, like stars or
knives.
Fangs of the Serpent: Known as "Powerleech," this power can be used on
non-SFs to steal wind.
Seize the Pearl of Death: Known as "Ricochet," this power can also be
used to bounce some arcane powers (bolts o' doom, atomic blast, etc.)
back.
Anyway, this is what I have. Any suggestions anyone has are greatly
appreciated.

be true to yourself in everything you do.
Happy Roleplaying,
