As for good music for HOE i would recommend,

the QUAKE 1 music, made by Trent Reznor (NIN) a very dark and atmosferic
cd, a very good one...

and something i stumbled over on the net (www.delirium.com : u can download
one whole album) called SYNAESTHESIA, goes under the category of
ambient/techno/industrial, (if only there was more of this music)

And in general ambient can be used as background music....
