Something to keep in mind is that the tech curve in our timeframe is
starting to level out a bit.  If you look at the quantum leap
technological growth over the last 50-100 years, I don't expect teh
same order of magnitude of change over t he next 100 years.    

A big chaneg in the technology dynamic is the end of teh Cold War. 
During the Cold War, most of the cutting edge technological advances
were done in miliatry research (Transistor, wireless comunications,
computers, the internet, etc....) With the demise of the Cold War, and
huge cuts in defense, cutting edge technology IS being done in
consumer electronics (PIMs, HDTV, DVD, etc...)  

SO while in 50 years we might see hand held HDTVs or 3D virtual
movies, I doubt that we will have hand-held laser pistols, gaussian
guns, etc...
