Any adult who wouldn't want to dump a defenseless kid off in the middle of an irradiated wasteland
would take the child with them. It's not often you run into "responsible adults" just sitting
around in the Wasted West, waiting for a little "bundle of joy" to come along and take a share of
their food and supplies.
Or, the kid has an adventurous spirit in him/her. Maybe the little guy or girl sneaks onto the
posse's semi rig when they roll out of town, and isn't found until it's too late to turn back.
Maybe the Kid is actually the Kid of one of the players. There you have an instant intercharacter
relationship.
If you want a good example of a kid character in an adventuring situation, think Newt in Aliens.
There's a perfectly good character, as far as roleplaying is concerned. She won't be kicking a lot
of ass right away, but it's all about roleplaying anyway...
