Let me tell you a story. Anyone on this list who was in the US Army
or Armed services can probably say they've seen the same thing:
When I was in basic, our instructors took a metal ammo can (about the
size of a vertical shoebox) and filled it with water. Our Drill
Sergeant then fired a round through the ammo can, sending water
everywhere. When the range instructor brought the can back the entry
hole of the bullet was just the size of the bullet. When he turned the
can around, he showed use the exit hole: big enough to stick my fist
into. That was a metal. Imagine what it could do to flesh. Think
"just" tumbling can do that much damage? :)
And for the record, a 5.56 round isn't the same size as a 9mm. Maybe
the same diameter, but it's length is probably about 1/3 or 1/4 the
length of an average pinky finger.
