I'd say just watch a few movies for ideas and go with the space you've 
got... But here's two other suggestions:

1. There's a History channel episode of, IIRC, Modern marvels that 
discusses the classic saloon bar setup, including details on how and 
why various elements came from.

2. The show 'Monster House' has an episode where they build an English 
pub in a house in California. While not quite appropriate, it might 
give you some nice ideas on how to combine modern conveniences and 
materials with old-fashioned style.
