Dear Butch,

Some very primitive camouflage was used in the Civil War.  The Union 
Sharpshooters wore green to help them hide, for example.  However, the 
tactics of the day didn't really encourage the use of camouflage.  If you 
want to have a character use it, they can go with earth tones or have them 
talk with an Apache -- who were reported masters of the art.  One time, an 
Apache told a US Cavalryman that he could hide himself very quickly.  The 
cavalryman gamely took him up on the challenge and turned his back for 
something like a 5 count.  When he turned back, he couldn't see the Apache 
-- who was within a few feet of him.
