In D20 (the only version I've played yet), duels actually seem overly
dangerous. Flat-footed opponents are remarkably easy to hit. The kind of
damage weapons do, combined with the sudden death Fortitude that follows,
makes for rather short duels. I guess that's in keeping with the spirit of
the Far West.

One problem I have with that, though, is that I don't like killing PCs on
the luck of the dice. I sure don't want to remove duels from the game,
though. They're a vital part of the atmosphere. Anyone have ideas about
reconciling duels and the mortlity rate?
