This is more of a Japanese mummy story but here goes:
For hundreds of years, a reclusive order of monks prove their devotion by
undertaking a frightful quest. For a full year the monk endures a pilgrimage
around Japan, hustling from one holy site or shrine to another. He covers
something like 10 or 20 miles per day if memory serves. Along the way the
monk eats and drinks very little, consuming only enough sustenance to
sustain himself for the next leg of the journey. The reason for this is
two-fold. By fasting he puts aside his earthly corporeal needs in order to
focus on his mental and spiritual development. Second, and more interesting,
there are discreet quantities of poison in each morsel of food and each drop
of drink. Yup, at the end of the journey, if the monk has been successful,
he returns to the origin of his pilgrimage and undergoes the following
ritual, the consumption of even greater quantities of the poison which is an
herbal and mineral stew which infuses the body with all manner of chemicals
and promotes rapid dehydration, i.e. mummification. The body is ceremonially
interred, dressed in robes and finery and enshrined in a large gathering
hall to officiate over religious ceremonies.
I don't know how many of these mummies exist but in the Deadlands universe
it's very likely one or more of these treasures have made their way to the
states and are treated as priceless relics. With all the martial arts stuff
happening in the Maze, it's not at all improbable several of the schools are
in possession of these "honored eternal masters" on hand. If the school in
question is of a malign bent the mummy may be as well. Perhaps it's like the
chinese sorceror in Big Trouble in Little China, possessing others or
wandering about incorporeal, desperate for a new corporeal form. Or maybe
it's a bad@ss martial arts master infused with Black Magic and Martial Arts
goodness. A fine new addition to the Marshal's bad-guy arsenal.
If there's an interst and Shane's amenable, I could see my way to posting
something more substantial in the near future, perhaps in the Epitaph.
Regards,
