[DL] Creepy places (Was: Winchester house)
Hey all,
Having toured the Winchester House I can surely say that it is -- bar
none -- the second creepiest place I've ever been. I mean the aura or
resonance of the place (if you believe is that sort of thing) was
really overwhelming. One could imagine what it would be like to be
there during their midnight Halloween tour (with just the flashlights,
my friends...).
Too bad it may not exist in the DL world (besides the Great Quake, it
was built in the 1830's, but Stevenson did reside there until late
1879), but the creepiest place I've ever been in has to be the
Stevenson House in Monterey. The "fear level" near the children's
room, reputed to be the common place at that location for sightings of
"the Woman in Black" ghost, was palatable and darned uncomfortable!
Then there was the statue of the Virgin Mary at the Carmel Mission
(where Father Junipero Serra was buried) -- that left a strong
impression on me as well. Relics in Deadlands, I came to imagine,
would not always "feel" warm and fuzzy.
Check out some really nifty stories about Monterey in Randall A.
Reinstedt's _Ghosts, Bandits, & Legends of old Monterey_.
