Re: [DL] Civil War re-enacting

I'm a civilian re-enactor. It's a lot of fun. But if you are a guy and go
civilian prepare to be heckled, especially if you plan of being a
Southern Civilian. Any man who could hold a gun in the south was expected
to fight. I've portrayed a sketch artist for the Galena Gazette, and
latley I've been an assistant photographer to my fiancees father. We
havn't done it yet, but the next time we go re-enacting we want to get on
the battlefield as its wrapping up and do a "drag". Many of the civil war
photographs you see of battlefields are staged. after the battle the
photographer and his assistants would drag the bodies into more
interesting possition, such as drapped across fences or leaned against
rocks. Perhaps you've seen the famous photo of the "sharpshooter" at
devils rock? that one was staged.

It's great fun. I get a lot of heckling though. because...
a) I'm a civilian
b) I've usually got my lady on my arm
c) That lady is damn cute
d) All my outfits are black (they think I'm an undertaker without my
camera)
e) I'm tall, lankey, dark haired, have a beard and used to wear a top hat
("Hey ABE!")

hey, it's worth it. and the soldiers are only playing their part.

I'd recomend it to any Deadlands fan. gives you a good feeling for camp
life, even if you are just a spectator.

Plus you can find all sorts of great costume and props stuff at the
suttlers (traveling merchants)

Hey speaking of which, if anyone goes to a re-enactment in the midwest,
keep an eye out for a photographer with his family by the name of Elijah
Dobbs, thats my future-father-in-law's persona.
