Actually we did exactly the same thing that P-A did. We just 
slightly modified the fighter class, specifically so that at 
particular levels he was able to call on old war buddies. At 
3rd level 1d4, at 5th level 1d6, at 7th level 1d8, etc. Keep 
in mind these troops come from the nearest bas4e, and that 
could still take days, and they only stay for the thing they 
were called to do. Also we used the rank system from 
Lonestars. Hope this helps.
