A memory.  A single, pure memory of happiness.  Any human
(good or evil) entrant has to make that sacrifice to get
into the game.

It's creepy, it's freaky, and when the players ask what
memory they lost, all you have to say is, "You don't
remember, and you never will."

That's my recommendation... but then I'm EVIL.  :-)
