I belive there's a mention of a portal to the Hunting Grounds in the Tales
of Terror 1877 book. Basically it's in Yellowstone Park. To access the
portal you need to jump into the Old Faithful geyser. If you manage to
survive you physically arrive in the Hunting Grounds. The only problem is
the trip might be one way. If memory serves I don't remember there being a
portal back to the real world mentioned in the text.

But yes, it sounds right for vision quests and stuff, but if he uses a
portal he could *physically* cross over, with would put him on the manitou's
home turf.  I recall there being something about that somewhere, but can't
remember where.
