My brother is a specialist on Romania and the region, so here is his help. You may want to check the date Romania was formed as most of the country was under the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1878 when Moldova, Valachia and part of Oltenia became the independent state of Romania. Transilvania (Ardeal and Romanian Banat) remained under the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the end of WWI. In Transilvania (The proper Romanian spelling as are all listed here) there was much ethnic strife between Hungarians and Romanians, and many Romanian refugees fled into what was than Romania. From 1878 their King was Carol I, who is still a beloved King. Remember that Dracula was not the monster of the game to the people of the region. Also, Bucuresti was the first capitol in Europe to have Gaslight and had it around the mid 1870s. This could suggest the use of Mad Scientist. Overall, the country was very split between the very poor peasants and the small in number aristocracy. My brother would be happy to answer any questions you want to send this way. If it helps, I can sit down with him and some of his Romanian/Hungarian friends and see if they know of any legendary paranormal/crytozoological stories from the area. I hope this helps and please keep in touch about the ideas you will be using as my own group might head across the Atlantic someday. Best, Tom Woodall |
