[DL] U.S. Volunteers
I don't recall right off if this is covered, but the discussion of colored troops got me to thinking.
How would you handle the U.S. Volunteer Regiments (galvanized yankees) that were recruited starting in the fall of 1864. These were fellows offered the chance to fight out west against indians, protecting the frontier, or stay in the care of the government until peace or death. The hope was to recruit a full regiment, but the conditons were so poor in the prisons that in the 7 months of the program 6 full regiments were recruited. These regiments served well after the war ended and had the lowest desertion rate in the union army, lower than regulars, lower than colored.
Where would these troops go in deadlands?
Would the program still be in force?
Would both sides institute the program?
What possible societial(sp) effects could the long term use of these troops have?
thinking
