I was planning to whole-heartedly steal the war
machines from J. Gregory Keyes' The Age of Unreason
series and give them to the Confederacy. It's a mite
hard to do when the posse up and moves across state
though. 

Yeah, the series isn't quite steampunk. It's a
different look at weird science in the early days of
America though. And it's more steampunk than Lord
Absinthe.
