  Just a while back there was a biography on Grant (on
PBS) and if memory serves me correctly, they said that
his wife owned slaves on a Missouri farm.  Also, that
her parents where dead set against the couple because
they where supporters of slavery and his parents where
abolitionist.
  I can't recall if they said Grant got rid of the
slaves during the war or not.
