RE: [DL] Quick note: Barnes & Nobles (OT)
I was at university in England in the mid to late 80s, and though D&D was played it was far from the only game in town, and by 1990 it made up maybe 1 game in 4 at the roleplaying clubs i went to, with stuff like Shadowrun, Rifts and Traveller much more popular. D&D WAS popular, but far from a majority choice. When I got to NZ everything was White Wolf, Call of Cthulhu and Cyberpunk - hardly anyone over 15 was playing D&D - indeed it was the D&D audience who took to CCGs and the hardcore roleplayers were all playing story-driven horror games.
Over the last 8 years my gaming group has played large amounts of Call of Cthulhu, Elric!, Pendragon, a little Ars Magica and now Deadlands, and around 10% of that time, D&D. The various external groups that the people I play with are in are all pretty much the same. I bought 3ed because I liked the improvements to D&D - it actually made it something I could stand to play again, but its not really set anyone alight with excitement.
