Or... the lamp is spirit-powered/possessed, and redistributes the life-force in the ward, taking a small cut for itself. The strongest patient there grows steadily weaker, while the other patients miraculously get better. Perhaps they have terrifying nightmares while they 'sweat' out whatever ails them. In any case, the 'doctor' takes credit for all the amazing cures.
And the formerly strongest patient (who inevitably succumbs)? Well, you are going to lose a few. There are plenty more to take his place. And in a time in which a trip to the hospital was practically akin to a death sentence anyway, who would suspect anything?
