Hi,
I quite agree that "John Brown's body" is an exceptionally northern
piece. At least, those lyrics are. However, that didn't stop southerners
from playing the tune with different lyrics. I have come across several
references to his. At the time, tunes were less plentiful than lyrics.
Consequently, the tunes were often recycled.
