Yup. I'd say any attempt to overawe or ridicule without at least some
roleplaying is doomed to failure. And, if they are trying to use it as a
source of cheap chips, it'll get turned around on them. Imagine the
ridicule bonuses when that strangely high-meined little old lady starts
turning things around. But the chips earned from any fitting attempt are
given without strings attached.
On a related note:
While i talk big, I'm actually a pretty easy going GM. In deadlands (and
HOE) I don't like to kill characters, and I find that they generally can
stay unwounded until they get to the boss of the adventure. One of my
players seems to feel that Deadlands is the type of game where
characters constantly suffer misfortune... I took this as a compliment
of course. Just because I have a bad habit of setting things up to mess
with the posse. (I.E. when I'm letting them loot & pillage, they know
they are going to need the cash to by transportation, or else they
assume the gear is a nasty bad-tainted relic...
I do stick with the rule that if you're heroic (hindrance or not),
things are a lot more likely to go your way, though.
