Re: [DL] cross-bow
ok joe,
i agree with you in some points, but, why the speed difference?
i've shot and made crossbows for the SCA.. it takes just as long to fire 1
as the other. the reload time is what varies, and that should depend on the
strength of the loader and/or what device he/she is using to draw back the
string.
light crossbows can be ruled as something that can be drawn by 1 hand; heavy
as those that need 2 hands, and a foot and/or a crank to draw back. and if
you are shooting, and arming a crossbow that shoots 3 foot long sticks, you
need a base to support it.
strength should be a factor on how fast you reload it and what metod is used
to draw back the string.. if you are weak, and have to install and use a
crank to pull back the string, it can take 10, 15, even 20 seconds easily.
as for damage id say light would do as much as an indian bow and heavy to do
more. i'd look these up in the injun sourcebook and quote the stats, but i'm
too lazy at the moment. :-))
i agree with your ranges.
also $1 if they are buying bolts/quarrals from a store or shop.. but they
can easily be crafted.

My list-serv brethren:
Has anyone come across (or just made up their own) stats for the standard
light cross-bow. Have a blessed monster-slayer whose partial to the weapon.
Especially interested in the type of damage it would do.

Now there's an unusual request! Well, just off the top of my head:
Light Crossbow 2d6 dmg Speed 1 10 range
Heavy Crossbow 2d8 dmg Speed 2 20 range
I'd rule that both the light and heavy crossbow are AP1 and AP2 respectively
at 0-9 yards and the heavy is AP1 at 10-19 yards.
The user's Strength trait really isn't a factor as the power of the weapon
comes from the tension generated by the bow itself. Cost would be in the
$20-$30 dollar range with quarrels costing around $1 each. This high price
reflects the rarity of the item in the Weird West.
Hope you'll find this useful.
