For whatever it's worth, I think you were right. I haven't played in
that adventure, so I'm not really familiar with it, but it doesn't sound as
though they were being very heroic from the start. They can rationalize
all they want, but heroes don't just give up and let innocent people die
like that. Now, part of the problem could be that they have a different
idea about the tone of the campaign than you do, a problem I've run into
myself. Have they been heroic in similar situations before, or have they
always been kind of mercenary? I think it's safe to say that we've all
gotten frustrated when we can't seem to figure out how to defeat an
obstacle, but they should expect consequences if they screw up royally.
