Re: [DL] The Civil War again
Hi,
Given that both parts of what used to be the United States had fought
two wars against the British, it is extremely unlikely that they would have
emulated the British Army. One example of this I noticed as I was leafing
through a book on Civil war equipment and just about the one colour not used
in a uniform coat was red.
Having said that, I also came across one unit (the 79th New York
Infantry) composed largely of immigrant Scots which decided to style
themselves as a Highland regiment complete with Cameron tartan kilts or
trews (trousers made out of tartan material).
As a useless aside, the fame of the ferocity of the British Highland
regiments was such that at one point an Afghan leader decided to form his
own "Highland" regiment, complete with kilts. I can't help wondering what
the Taliban would have thought of that! ;-)
