I looked at it more as, "This person is a vampire. We didn't make
him that way, but he's there, and we can give him a chance to do some good,
and try to keep them on the straight 'n' narrow."
There's also a healthy element of "Keep your friends close, and
your enemies closer" in King's perspective as well.

         Indeed they do.

Joining the Rangers is literally joining the Army as well, and
that shouldn't be in any way a secret to anyone. I don't know exactly what
your Arcane PCs would expect of the Rangers, but if nothing else, it means
that you're a Private with a whole heck of a lot of people ordering you
around.
Sure, in truth it's even worse than that for ABs, but not all that
different, really, from what happens to anyone who enlists: your @ss
belongs to the government until either The War or your usefulness ends.
Any Ranger who deserted would have the entire organization dogging
their heels for the remainder of his brief life. Short version: time to
roll up a new character, Junior.;-)

Band members have no Rank; Rank is a prequisite for Ranger Gear.

I don't have my WW stuff handy (busy on LC as I am), but I *think*
there's a Divine Intervention that cures lycanthropy & vampirism.

King is simply helping these people the best way he knows: by
keeping a close eye on them, encouraging them to do good, and giving them a
noble purpose before any pernicious ideas enter their heads.
If King knew of a practical cure, he'd give it to them, but Divine
Interventions are a far cry from the Salk Vaccine.

         Thanks again for the post!
