A rifle scabbard is normally attached to a saddle. I suppose you could rig
up something that was on the back like this, but it seems like it would be
uncomfortable as a get out. Also there would be virtually no way to draw
the rifle quickly.

It is not actually a speed loader, but a spare cylander. In many of the
older pistols the cylinder was removable. By carrying a spare you would pop
the old cylinder out and stick in a new, fully loaded one. Modern speed
loaders are very different. Neither would work with a rifle.

As always, fun is much more important than realism. If the Marshal allows
it and the group enjoys it, it sounds good to me.
