It's based in one of the Eddas.  For 9 days Odin hung on the Wolrd Tree, 
pierced by spear, hanging from the wind swept gallows.  This is where Odin 
learned the runes.\\

It is in the other edda (younger?) that talks about Odin's eye sitting in 
the bottom of Mimer's well.
