I wouldn't see it as a problem for a Ranger to have knowledge about
Patchwork Science - I mean a Ranger having knowledge of lycanthropy,
vampirism or occult activities would probably be viewed as a necessary
evil - as you often have to understand what it is you are facing before
you can put it down. Sure patchwork science is more specialised but I
would apply the same principle.
As for what to call the skill. I probably leave it as the same skill
as the practising scientists use themselves, however wouldn't allow
anyone to get above a skill of 2 or 3 without actually attempting to
practice patchwork science themselves (even although any effort is
certain to fail without the proper AB). If the Ranger crossed this
line "in the name of research" I'd then expect the Texas Rangers to
"terminate" his employment post haste as soon as it was discovered.
