[DL] The Faustian Deal (no players!)

Well it’s been a slow day on the List Serve,

Here’s a question:

(Wait for the Spoiler space you noisy players… really this stuff is beyond you)

It has been said in the various books and on the server that the Servitors (Stone, Raven etc) had to make a “Faustian” deal with the devil in order get their powers and apparently their fame in the Deadlands universe. My question is this: do you think this is akin to the Devil actually making the deal with the NPC. That is, do the Reckoners come to the Servitor and hammer out a deal? Or do is it more of a gradual thing like the Dark Powers of Ravenloft™ where gradual evil grants you this terrible powers? Perhaps it is a mixture of the two.

For the record, this is my current theory:

Raven: being the first of the Servitors. He was of the gradual type. He no doubt was working on selling his soul to the Reckoners, and his practice of Evil Sorcery (redundant for Indians) was his method. But I don’t think that the Reckoner’s ever actually talked to him, but if any of the Reckoners did talk to the respective Servitors, Raven would be the one that they talked to.

Stone: Probably the second Servitor. Based on information in the Devil Mountain Trilogy, it appears that the Manitou were the intermediaries between Stone and the Reckoners. I am sure that there was a deal involved. “Help us kill people, and you can live again and be immortal”.

Hellstromme: I suspect that he doesn’t even realize that he is a Servitor. He is so obsessed with his inventions and the power of ghost rock that he doesn’t realize that he is Harrowed (well how else does he become a cyborg?). I believe that he is one of those Ravenloft™ gradual power Servitors. Until the Bombs fall, he doesn’t even realize that the Reckoner’s are real. I am quite sure that suspects the voices in his head are not the Manitou but his own internal voice.

Grimme: As has been explained in the books, the Reckoners cheated when created Grimme, since he was already dead. But the cult around him serves as the Reckoners need for the Servitors. I am quite sure that the Reckoners didn’t talk to the cult. Although since Grimme is an artificial construct, I suspect that he isn’t in contact with the Reckoners, but a Manitou feeds him all sorts of information about the Reckoner’s plans.

I am interested to hear what everybody else thinks about this.
