How about magnesium/sodium/potassium? I don't know how fast each metal burns, but it occured to me that you could use a high-speed grinding wheel to throw showers of metal 'sparks'. Unlike normal sparks which are simply hot, these would literally be burning. They'd burn/set fire to whatever they hit, then burn themselves out.
Similar effects to a flamethrower, but using a different concept. Anyone know anything about these metals that would nix the idea? I do know that water would be a concern, but it could also be a method of igniting the sparks (via an atomizer, etc.).
