As an idea for how to get the Posse clued up with what
is going on, how about having the person linked to El
Pumpkin slowly start to assume the form of his demonic
soul buddy. 

Every night at sunset, after the initial night of the
summoning, the summoner assumes another taint of this
"unholy pact" (cue organ music and the clap of
thunder). Perhaps their skin starts to become
leathery, head starts to slowly deform, that sort of
thing. 

In this way the Posse get to realise something is just
not right with this person and might start to think
about what is going on about the place. 

If they discover that the two are linked in some
manner, they may have a chance to discover the
creature's weakness in time to stop it.
